Gas line
Gas lines
Gas piping for stoves, dryers, water heaters and other appliances: new lines, extensions, and repairs, with the permit and leak test handled.
Gas piping is work for a licensed gas fitter, and in most places it needs a permit and an inspection. Typical jobs include a new gas line to a range, a dryer, or a water heater; moving or extending a line when a kitchen or laundry layout changes; replacing old flexible connectors; and repairing a leak found at a joint or valve.
If you smell gas, treat it as an emergency. Do not turn lights or appliances on or off, do not use a phone inside, leave the house, and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Do not call a plumber first. A plumber can help after the utility has made the area safe.
What we do. We run, extend and repair gas piping to appliances, install shutoff valves, test the system for leaks before it is put in service, and arrange the permit and inspection where one is required.
What affects the cost. The length and route of the new line, whether it runs through finished walls or an open basement, the size of the pipe needed for the total appliance load, the number of appliances, the permit and inspection, and whether the meter or the gas service itself needs to be changed by the utility. The utility, not a plumber, handles the meter and everything upstream of it.
Before you buy an appliance. Check where the gas supply is. A gas dryer or range in a home that has none requires a new line, which is a bigger job than swapping the appliance. If you want to ask us first, call before you buy.
Questions we hear
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house, do not switch anything on or off, and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Do not call a plumber first.
Do I need a permit to run a gas line?
In most jurisdictions yes, and the work is inspected. Requirements differ between DC, Maryland and Virginia, and between counties, so we check the local rules for your address.
Can you convert my stove or dryer from electric to gas?
If there is gas on the property, we can run a line to the appliance location. If your house has no gas service at all, the utility has to bring it to the meter first.
Should I replace an old flexible gas connector?
Old corrugated connectors can corrode or crack, especially if the appliance has been moved. If yours is old or has been bent, have it replaced when you replace the appliance.
