Plumbing in Alexandria, VA
Local notes on your water utility, common problems and rebates, plus what we can help with.
Alexandria is an independent city. Virginia American Water supplies drinking water, and AlexRenew treats the wastewater. Homes range from historic townhouses in the older neighborhoods to postwar houses and condos farther out.
We serve Alexandria homeowners with drain and sewer work, water line repair, water heaters, fixture and leak repair, and gas lines. If the problem is on the utility's side of the property line, we will say so.
What to know in Alexandria
- Two different utilities
- Water comes from Virginia American Water and wastewater is handled separately by AlexRenew and the city. Which of them to call depends on whether the issue is clean water or sewage.
- No city rebate we could confirm
- As of October 2026 our research found no active lead line replacement or WaterSense toilet rebate for Alexandria. Rules change, so ask Virginia American Water if you are replacing a lead line.
- Older townhouse plumbing
- Older townhouses have long, shared-wall pipe runs and older drain lines. Tree roots are a common reason a main drain keeps clogging in an older neighborhood.
